Large basin of limestone, approx. 80m south of Brock Street. Mid C19. Shallow basin almost 2m in diameter has moulded rim with eroded Vitruvian scroll. Radiating acanthus leaves at base rise from circular cornice. Fluted base sweeps out to square pedestal with cornice and eroded inscription to south side, recording its donation by S.S.V. Pieroni. HISTORY: An exceptionally large basin, showing the capabilities of Bath stone and forming an important element in the embellishment of the park. Victoria Park was laid out in 1830 on the former Barton Fields, an area of common land and was opened by the Duchess of Kent with her daughter, Princess Victoria, on October 23rd 1830. It was the country's first municipal park. Listing NGR: ST7456165241
