(Formerly Listed as: VICTORIA PARK Vase near Queen's Parade Gates) 05/08/75
GV II
Vase on pedestal. Probably C19. Italian, Carrara marble vase and pedestal, Pennant stone base. Urn decorated with high relief figures of putti carrying garlands of fruit, derived from reliefs on Roman sarcophagi. Hemispherical base has low-relief carved acanthus leaves, circular fluted stand rests on square base. Plinth has cornice and double-stepped base. Die bears inscription "THIS VASE WHICH ORIGINALLY STOOD IN THE VILLA GRIMANI STRA-PADUA WAS PRESENTED TO THE COMMITTEE OF THE VICTORIA PARK, BATH BY A RESIDENT. AUGUST 1910." HISTORY: An interesting instance of the ongoing desire to embellish the park with lapidary donations, and one with a curiously precise provenance. Victoria Park was laid out in 1830 on the former Barton Fields, an area of common land and was opened by the Duchess of Kent with her daughter, Princess Victoria, on October 23rd 1830. It was the country's first municipal park. SOURCES: Bath History: Whalley R: The Royal Victoria Park: Bath: 1994-: 147-169.
