GV II
Boundary wall, gatepiers and gateways. c1740. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, some cast iron work. At each end of frontage to Westfield House (qv) pairs of large square rusticated piers on moulded offset bases, with stone stops to inner faces, with moulded capitals carrying square blockings with heavy ball finials with fluted equatorial band. Beyond outer pier in each case is coped lintel in form of rusticated voussoirs, linking with further rusticated pier of same size, without moulded capping or blocking. A left hand, or upper end, this part of ensemble covers gate with close-set vertical rails and concave top rail and opens to No.174 (qv), part of original enclosure to main house. Between main piers is wall, with two rusticated courses on moulded base, below deep splayed band, under plain ashlar wall carrying cresting of short-iron spearheads. Wall ramped to follow slope across site, adjacent pavement has been built up, partly concealing the base course.
