RUSSELL STREET 656-1/30/1454 (East side) No.12 and attached railings
(Formerly Listed as: RUSSELL STREET Nos.1-18 (Consec)) 12/06/50 GV II
House, now flats. c1771-1773. Architect: John Wood the Younger. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar to front, rubble to plinth to basement, ashlar to rear, double pile parapeted mansard roof, Welsh Slate to front, artificial slate to rear, with coped party wall to right with two ashlar stacks with some early clay pots. Staircase to rear. EXTERIOR: Three storeys, attic and basement, three-window front. First floor has three two/two-sashes in ovolo moulded architraves with splayed jambs with friezes and cornices, lowered moulded stone sills on cut down console brackets with wrought iron balconettes. Second floor has two plate glass sashes in ovolo moulded architraves with stone sills. Ground floor has two plate glass two/two sashes to right; to left, a six-panel door with flush beaded, fielded and single glazed panel with single Pennant step in cyma moulded architrave with flat surround with heavy console brackets supporting moulded cornice forming hood over, single step to crossover paved with three large Pennant slabs with C19 cast iron footscraper. Basement has two two-light casements in plain reveals with stone sills, C20 door under crossover, limestone area steps with Pennant inserts to treads with part wrought iron handrail. Two single dormers with plate glass sashes in moulded architraves. Band course over ground floor, modillion eaves cornice and coped parapet lowered in front of each dormer. Rear elevation partially visible has plate glass sashes, parapeted ashlar extension off staircase up to second half-landing. INTERIOR: Not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Attached wrought iron railings and gate with shaped heads on limestone bases. HISTORY: Russell Street developed by John Wood in conjunction with Assembly Rooms and east end of Rivers Street on part of Holdstock's Garden or Russell's Close bought by Wood and Andrew Sproule, his trustee, from Thomas and Daniel Omer 30th December 1768.
