Gothic Cottage Ornee, 1797. MATERIALS: Flemish-bond brick facade, random bond to returns with Bath stone dressings, double pitched, double Roman tile roof with brick bases to moulded stacks to returns and rear. EXTERIOR: Two storey, symmetrical three-window front range. Ogee-arched six-flush-panel door, glazed to top with cast iron knocker, flanked by later hip-roofed stone slated lean-to running across entire front, with porch in centre and rows of four-light small-paned casement windows either side, with thicker glazing bars to Gothic overlights. Three ogee-arched six/six-pane sash windows with Gothic glazing bars to first floor with stone dressings; classical rusticated quoins, coped parapet, returned cornice and cornice band above. INTERIOR: Not inspected. Bath Preservation Trust Interiors Survey reports survival of panelled doors with Gothick motifs to drawing room and study; coved ceiling to breakfast room with cable moulding; Gothick grey marble chimneypiece to dining room, Gothic plasterwork to hall and elsewhere; stone staircase with iron rails decorated with Gothick motifs, mahogany handrail. HISTORY: According to the Bath Directory for 1862 James Dredge, Engineer and designer of the Victoria Bridge (qv) lived in Gothic Cottage, Sion Hill. An unusual house in terms of materials and the mixture of Gothic and classical design elements. A drawing of the cottage pre-alterations to front is in the Bath Reference Library.
