BRUNSWICK PLACE No.1 Brunswick House and attached Railings (Formerly Listed as: JULIAN ROAD (South side) Nos 1-6 (consec) Brunswick Place) 11/08/72

GV II

House, now flats. 1783 (Building lease dated 30 October 1783) with C19 and C20 alterations. Developed by John Fielder and Thomas and James Beale; built by James Matthews. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar to front, rubble below basement windows, not visible to rear; double pile parapeted roof to left, with two ashlar stacks with some early clay pots on coped party wall to left; to right parapeted mansard roof covered in Welsh Slate, possibly double pile, not visible to rear, has truncated ashlar stack to right. PLAN: House at junction of Brunswick Place and Rivers Street has wedge shaped plan narrowing to rear to right side and to right breaks forward to terminate Brunswick Place, a quasi-symmetrical composition with terminating pavilions breaking forward to left and right (Nos 1 and 6) and horizontal elements continuous throughout (cf. Burlington Place). Staircase probably to rear right. EXTERIOR: First floor has to left three plate glass horned sashes in splayed reveals, to right six/six sash in splayed reveal; second floor has to left three two/two horned sashes in splayed reveals with stone sill, to right two six/six sashes in splayed reveals with stone sills. Ground floor has to left three plate glass horned sashes in splayed reveals with stone sill, small circular opening with metal grille, eight panel door with fielded and glazed panels with early letter plate with stamped lettering BRUNSWICK HOUSE with three Pennant steps in pedimented Doric doorcase. Basement has to left two six/six sashes in splayed reveals with stone sills, blocked doorway to left, small six pane fixed light window in plain reveal to left return of break forward, C20 two pane window in plain reveal with splayed lintel to right. Mansard roof to right has double dormer with six/six sashes, to left two two/two horned sashes in splayed reveals with stone sills and similar blind window to centre. Plinth to right; band course over ground floor with incised lettering BRUNSWICK PLACE to right, weathered sill band to first floor; bracketed eaves cornice with coped parapet to right, built up to full third floor over to left with small hollow moulded cornice and coped parapet. INTERIOR: Not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Attached wrought iron railings with shaped heads on limestone bases.
