DARLINGTON PLACE (West side) Nos.19 AND 20 (Formerly Listed as: DARLINGTON PLACE Nos.11-20 (Consec)) 11/08/72

Pair of terrace houses. Early C19 (OS says pre-1830) with late C19 and C20 alterations. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, slate roofs with moulded stacks to party wall and right return. PLAN: Double depth plans. EXTERIOR: Two storeys, attic to No. 20 to left, and lower ground floors. Each house two window range with continuous coped parapet and cornice. No. 19 has double pitched roof, six/six pane sash windows, that to ground floor left has louvered shutters, to right is timber lintel to fixed twelve pane window above single storey projecting porch with blocking course as parapet and painted surround to six panel door. Forecourt has been removed to left to allow light to lower ground floor. INTERIOR: Open string staircase with swept mahogany rail. No. 20 has toothed facade to left implying that terrace unfinished. Late C19 attic, probably with flat roof between stacks, horned plate glass windows, that to ground floor left have louvred shutters. Similar porch to No. 19 with late C19 four-panel door and C20 glazed lean-to conservatory to front. INTERIORS: Not inspected. HISTORY: This development on the Bathwick Estate took its name from Henry Vane, 4th Earl of Darlington who succeeded to the estate of the Countess of Bath in 1808. John Pinch the Elder was associated with much of the development on this estate.
