Commercial building. Offices with shops. Mid C19 with C20 alterations. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, slate roof. PLAN: Flat quadrant in five bays returning to Upper Borough Walls, plus single straight bay to Burton Street, hipped roof. EXTERIOR: Four storeys, windows all plain sash; at third floor small square windows in eared architraves, broad panel links heads, on sill band and with projecting moulded sills on brackets, at second floor with flat segmental heads, in eared architraves and with scrolled centre and small lion heads, sills dropped below a plinth band, above fluted frieze over first floor lights with flat segmental heads, eared architraves joined by thin mould, and with flat segmental cornices. Ground floor has been replaced by a continuous 1971 shopfront. Main entablature has deep brackets over each window, and shallow blocking course with parapet. Ashlar stacks with bracketed cappings. INTERIOR: Not inspected. Included for group value. This building is shown in a drawing by C.E. Davis of 1880 showing his design for the next door premises. SOURCES: G.
