SPRINGFIELD PLACE 656-1/16/1523 (West side) Nos.5 AND 6 and attached railings, gates and overthrow

Symmetrical pair of houses. c1820. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, roof unseen, moulded stacks to party wall and returns. PLAN: Double depth plan. EXTERIOR: Two storeys and basement, symmetrical seven-window front, with coved niche and blind window to party wall; recessed and lower side ranges. Returned coped parapets, cornices and lintel friezes, central five ranges step slightly forward with first floor sill band over chamfered rustication and tall voussoirs to ground floor; side ranges have first floor sill string courses. Six/six-pane sash windows those to central block have balconettes, six-panel doors. No.5 to left has horns to restored windows in left wing. To left of central block six-panel door under mid/late C19 hipped swept canopy on brackets. No.6 has restored windows with horns. INTERIORS: Not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Front gardens enclosed by square section railings on plinths, double gates with concave-curved tops have overthrows with key-pattern panels and scrolls which sweep up to lamp holders. HISTORY: Part of this highly characteristic Regency suburban development, showing the influence of the Greek Revival on Bath's domestic architecture.
