CAMDEN CRESCENT The Lodge and attached wall, lamp and railings (Formerly Listed as: CAMDEN CRESCENT Camden Lodge) 05/08/75

GV II

Lodge to Camden Crescent on a peninsular site with the west entrance front in Camden Row. Early C19 with C20 alterations. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, slate roof gabled to the returns, with clay ridge tiles, gabled dormer to left-of-centre front and moulded stack to rear. PLAN: Two-unit. EXTERIOR: Single storey, two-window range. Eaves cornice and eaves band encircle building; C20 nine-paned windows flank five-panel door under shallow hood on shaped brackets. Gable end of south right return forms pediment over returned cornice, panelled pilasters support smaller cornice over wide central six/six-pane sash window with splayed reveals (possibly former eight/eight-pane sash). Rear has C20 door and nine-pane window to right. INTERIOR: Inspected by City of Bath 1979. The back room has a sliding sash window on the east side. Plaster on lath over stone walls. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Rough ashlar wall approx 1m high attached to rear, borders north side of back garden and turns to follow Camden Crescent. Approx. 1m from south-west corner of lodge is taller pier with wrought iron support and lamp bracket. Cross plan support has vertical crossed semicircles to base and four vertical square-section railings to each axis that converge toward horizontal cross at top, railings are separated at centre by row of circles. Square lid and finial cover scrolled support to former lamp bowl (now C20 lamp). To left C20 railings. Porch demolished 1979. HISTORY: A lesser, yet still significant, part of the Camden Crescent ensemble, showing the provision of watchman's accommodation at the entrance to the crescent.
