GV II

House, now an Abbeyfield House. c1777 with C19 and C20 alterations. By John Wood the Younger. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar to front, rendered to rear. Double pile parapeted mansard roof, Welsh slate to front and rear, coped party wall to left with two ashlar stacks with some early clay pots. PLAN: Staircase to front. EXTERIOR: Three storeys, attic and basement, three-window range. First floor has three six/six horned sashes each with three fixed panes below in splayed ovolo moulded architraves with friezes and cornices with lowered moulded stone sills on console brackets. Second floor has three six/six sashes in ovolo moulded architraves with stone sills. Ground floor has to left two six/six sashes in splayed reveals with stone sills, to right six-panel door with flush beaded, fielded and single glazed panel with cast iron lion's mask knocker in stone doorcase with cyma moulded architrave and moulded cornice on console brackets forming hood over, crossover paved with four large pennant slabs has C19 cast iron footscraper. Small two-pane window in plain reveal with stone sill to right of door. Basement has two six/six sashes in plain reveals with stone sills, C20 door in ashlar infilling under crossover, no area steps. Double dormer with plate glass horned sashes. Band course over ground floor; modillion eaves cornice and coped parapet. Rear elevation has to first floor three two/two sashes with continuous wrought iron balcony on wrought iron brackets, six/six sashes to second floor and in two single dormers built out to form single large dormer, two/two sashes to ground floor and small ashlar extension. INTERIOR: Partially inspected by Bath Council 1992. Double connecting doors on first floor, blocked up. Neo-classic frieze in ground floor front room SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Attached wrought iron railings with shaped heads on painted limestone bases.
