UPPER BRISTOL ROAD
Nos. 1 and 2 Down House

(Formerly listed as Nos. 1 and 2 Down Street)

II
A pair of houses, originally one house, c1820. Limestone ashlar. Roof concealed behind parapet, large gable end stacks on side parapets.

PLAN: former central entrance and stair hall, double depth room arrangement on each side. Secondary entrance to the left.

EXTERIOR: three storeys with a symmetrical three bay front with giant corner pilasters; cornice, parapet and string course at first floor window cill level. Ground and first floor have twelve pane sashes, second floor have nine pane sashes with a tall eighteen pane stair window at the centre of the first floor over central doorway with small flanking window to the right.

INTERIOR: not inspected.

SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: a pair of Bath stone shallow vases with mask ornament flank the door openings.

HISTORY: the elevation is similar to the work of John Pinch, carried out on the Bathwick Estate at the same time. The house has been sub-divided for a considerable time, as the dwarf wall running up to the inserted door openings appears to be late Victorian in date.
