WALCOT PARADE 656-1/31/1782 (North side) High Pavement and railings fronting Walcot Parade

(Formerly Listed as: LONDON ROAD (North side) High Pavement of Walcot Parade) 11/08/72

GV II

Raised terrace over basement vaults to Walcot Parade (qv). c1770. Approximately 200m long on concave curve, pavement ramps up from left for approximately 30m to approximately 4m high in front of No.1. rounded freestone plinth to units of plain railings with spikes removed articulated at this end by substantial cast iron piers with domed heads, octagonal bases and formalized foliate shafts. Flight of steps at right, east end have two similar piers. Wall below, mostly rubblestone with some rough ashlar has C19 and C20 doors and windows to basements, except No.10 has C18 six-panel door. High narrow pavement to base with some steps may have been continuous mounting block. This unusual feature, taking advantage of the sloping site, was constructed as part of the terracing on which Walcot Parade stands. The subterranean storage spaces together with the pavement surface comprise a structure within a meaning of the Act. SOURCES: Walter Ison, 'The Georgian Buildings of Bath' (2nd ed 1980),152.
