Public house. c1750 with C19 and C20 alterations. MATERIALS: Rough limestone ashlar facade, rubblestone to rest, single pitched slate roof with plain eaves and moulded stacks to gable ends. PLAN: Rectangular with addition to left. EXTERIOR: Three storeys, five bays. Plate glass sash windows. Stepped arrises and flush surrounds are evidence that moulded architraves have been cut away except to central first floor window. Windows to ground floor have splayed reveals. First floor platband, narrow ground floor platband level with thick stepped flat hood supported by massive shaped brackets over heavily rusticated doorcase and C20 door. Original shape of steeply pitched lower roof visible on returns. To right of door two storey plain buttress. INTERIOR: Some chamfered beams and some boxed-in beams to ground floor, plastered beams to first floor; otherwise largely opened out. The pub has been extended behind into the former stable area, and the original brewhouse is now absorbed within the private area. HISTORY: It is mentioned in the Council minutes for 25th June 1753 and probably extended in 1768 (minutes for 27th June 1768). Although much rebuilt overall, the door surround constitutes a good survival of the local Late Baroque style so criticised by John Wood. The upper floor is an addition. This part of Walcot Street was formerly known as Cornwall Street.
