Terrace house, now flats. c1790-1793 with C19 and C20 alterations. By John Palmer. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar to front, render to basement, ashlar and rubble to rear, double pile parapeted mansard roof, Welsh slate to front, double Romans to rear, with coped party wall with two ashlar stacks with early clay pots to right. Staircase to rear. EXTERIOR: Three storeys, attic and basement, single-bay three-window front. First floor has three grouped four/four, six/six, four/four sashes, narrower to left and right, in splayed reveals. Second floor has three similar windows in plain reveals with continuous stone sill. Ground floor has to right two plate glass horned sashes in splayed reveals with continuous stone sill, to left six-panel door with beaded, fielded and glazed panels with cast iron wreath knocker in stone doorcase with C19 moulded architrave, incised pilaster strips with console brackets over and moulded cornice, one step to pennant paved crossover with cast iron footscraper attached at one end to doorcase. Basement has two nine/six sashes in plain reveals with continuous stone sill, C20 door with overlight in ashlar infilling under crossover, C20 area steps. Triple dormer with two plate glass horned sashes and casement. Timber bressumer and stone band course over ground floor, weathered sill band to first floor, frieze, moulded eaves cornice and coped parapet, lead hopperhead and down pipe to right. Rear elevation partially visible, has six/six sashes, plate glass horned sash in single dormer; lead hopperhead. INTERIOR: Not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Attached wrought iron railings and gate with cast urn heads on limestone bases. HISTORY: Part of St James's Square development on land leased by Fielder, King, Hewlett and Broom from Sir Peter Rivers Gay 25 March 1790.
