FOUNTAIN BUILDINGS
No.7 and attached railings and vaults (Formerly Listed as: FOUNTAIN BUILDINGS Nos.4-8 (Consec)) 12/06/50
GV II
House, now flats. c1775 with C20 alterations. Possibly by John Wood the Younger. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar to front, rubble and render to left side, two storey ashlar extension to rear, parapeted mansard roof, Welsh slate to front, not visible to rear, with coped gable and party walls to left and right, to right with early clay pots. EXTERIOR: Three storeys and basement, five-window range. First floor has five plate glass horned sashes in splayed cyma moulded architraves with friezes and cornices, with pediment to centre, rising from stone sills, second floor has five similar sashes in cyma moulded architraves with stone sills. Ground floor has five similar sashes in plain reveals with stone sills, to centre left six-panel door with fielded panels in flat surround with beaded reveal. Basement has blocked window lit by grating in pavement to right, door under crossover not visible, no visible openings to vaults, C20 area steps. Two double and two single dormers with plate glass sashes. Plinth to right, band course over ground floor; bracketed eaves cornice and coped parapet. Rear elevation not visible. INTERIOR: Not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Attached wrought iron railings and gate with shaped heads on limestone bases. HISTORY: This group of double-fronted houses were built by William Philips and others and incorporated an earlier house within their midst. A plaque on No. 4 Fountain Buildings (qv) records restoration by Knightstone Housing Association 1981.
