GV II*
House, now office. 1740, restored late C20. By John Wood the Elder. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar with Welsh slate roof. EXTERIOR: Three storeys, attic and basement, three windows wide. Platband at first floor level. Ground floor has eight-panel door in plain architrave, two six/six sash windows of late C18 type. Wrought iron area railings, basement has two nine/six-sashes. First floor has three sashes as above but with dropped sills, six/nine, and with corniced heads, plain architraves. Second floor six/six with plain architraves. Dentil cornice, parapet, mansard roof, three flat topped dormers, with three/six sashes. Ashlar ridge stack to right with pots. INTERIOR: Not inspected. Decorative plasterwork to stairs includes a moulded ceiling panel over the rounded half-landing to the stairs (illus. In Ison, pl 120a). No. 4: see Ison, plate 120a for photograph of enriched plaster ceiling to semi-circular apse on first half landing. HISTORY: Part of John Wood's uncompleted scheme for the Abbey Orchard, 1740-1748.
