Shop with accommodation over. c1815. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar with roof hidden from street. PLAN: Single depth plan, backing onto No.1 Abbey Street (qv). EXTERIOR: Three storeys, three windows to York Street, one to splayed corner, none to Abbey Street above ground floor, windows with chamfered reveals, all late C19 plate glass plain sashes. First floor platband. Door of six flush panels. Plain shopfront to corner, with entrance in splay, part glazed door with rectangular light over, mid C19 two by two shop window to Abbey Street, plain plate glass window to York Street, one six/six sash on left. Cornice, parapet, plain tall ashlar stack rising up the full height of gable wall of No.1 Abbey Street, no pots. INTERIOR: Not inspected. HISTORY: York Street was cut through from Stall Street in 1806, and the house north of No.1 Abbey Street was demolished, and this narrow site later redeveloped. It was Hand¿s Dairy, see surviving painted sign on first floor, from c1850. The canted corner echoes that at the eastern end of the street, indicative of the desire of this Regency improvement scheme to impose order on this hitherto haphazard area.
