MONTPELIER No.1 and attached railings and vaults (Formerly Listed as: JULIAN ROAD (North side) Nos 1-4 (consec) Montpelier) 11/08/72

GV II

Terrace house. c1770-1776 with C19 and C20 alteration. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar to front, painted to ground floor and basement, rubble and ashlar to rear, double pile parapeted mansard roof, Welsh slate to front, artificial slate to rear, with two ashlar stacks with early clay pots rising from coped party wall to right. Staircase to rear. EXTERIOR: Three storeys, attic and basement, single bay three-window front. First floor has Venetian window with plate glass horned sashes in splayed reveals with lowered stone sill with large wrought iron balconette on scrolled wrought iron brackets (cf. 2 and 3 Montpelier qv). Second floor has three grouped four/four, six/six, four/four sashes in splayed reveals with continuous stone sill. Ground floor has to left two paired two/two sashes in splayed reveals with continuous stone sill, to right six-panel door with flush, fielded and glazed panels in stone doorcase with ovolo moulded architrave with frieze and moulded cornice over, one step to pennant paved crossover with C19 cast iron footscraper. Basement has two two/two horned sashes in plain reveals with splayed jambs set within recessed panel and with continuous stone sill, blocked doorway in infilling under crossover, two-light casement window to vaults, C20 area steps. Double dormer with plate glass sashes. Band course over ground floor, sill band to first floor, bracketed eaves cornice and coped parapet all continuous with Nos 2, 3 and 4 Montpelier (qv). Rear elevation partially visible has inserted W.C on half level over second floor with wall rebuilt in ashlar and raised above parapet and with window inserted over in roof. INTERIOR: Not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Attached wrought iron railings and gate with shaped heads on limestone bases. Attached vaults carry raised pennant pavement with simple wrought iron railing to front edge, two small openings, one with plank door, one blocked, to roadway.
