Shops with accommodation over. Early C19. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, now all painted, roofs not visible. PLAN: Single depth plan, backing onto Nos 15-18 The Corridor (qv), and some have been physically joined with these. EXTERIOR: Two storeys, one window each, early C19 eight/eight-sashes on upper floor. Each has shopfront. No.5 has reproduction small paned bow, and leaded fanlight. Nos 6 and 7 have square bays on brackets, c1830, with glazing bars. No.8 has square bay on brackets, in four panes with vertical glazing bars only. Shop windows and doors have reeded jambs, and lintels with lion mask paterae in angles. Cornice, parapet, tall stacks with pots. INTERIORS: Not inspected. The buildings are individually modest but together have unity and group value. A particularly charming terminal feature at the east end is the archway into High Street, with, above it, the pedimented rear elevation of No.21 High Street (qv). Northumberland Place was built on the site of a medieval close, Marchant's Court, which is clearly shown on Gilmore's map of 1694.
