NEW KING STREET (South side) No.17 and attached railings (Formerly Listed as: NEW KING STREET (South side) Nos.10-17 (Consec)) 12/06/50

Terrace house. 1764-1770 with C19 alterations. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, slate roof. PLAN: Generous town house, with double mansard roof, and entry with staircase to left. EXTERIOR: Three storeys, attic and basement, single bay, plain sashes, three twelve-pane sash dormers above tripartite to second floor above deeper tripartite in splayed surrounds, and with floating cornice. Ground floor has paired plain sash in splayed surrounds. To left six-panel door in architrave, with broken pediment on pilasters with consoles. Platband over ground floor, modillion cornice to stopped ends, blocking course and parapet, coped party divisions with deep stacks to right. Straight joint each side. INTERIOR: Very fine cornicing. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Simple railings on stone curb, returned at ends, contain basement area. HISTORY: The external fabric reveals the staggered building history of the row. The full terrace has broad consistency of detail, but with variations in elevations, building was in small sections, here single unit, marked by straight joints.
