Two terrace houses. c1764-1770. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, low-pitched slate roofs. EXTERIOR: Three storeys and basement, each two windows, twelve-pane sashes in architraves and with straight cornice hoods to first floor, all first floor windows have been extended down through former sill band, and to No.2 in fifteen-panes. Each has twelve-pane splayed reveals to ground floor, and to basement. To left and right six-panel door in architrave and with pediment on pilasters with consoles, and on two steps with landing. Platband above ground floor, modillion cornice with blocking course and parapet, large central ridge stack. To rear each has two windows, plain sash to No.1 and with renewed glazing bars to No.2. Basement develops as full lower ground floor, with door. Thin cavetto strings at each level. INTERIORS: Not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Simple railing on stone curb encloses basement areas, and returned at each end to doorways. HISTORY: These two houses were designed as a unit with No.22 Charles Street (qv), which is set at right angles to them, and forms a stopped end to the group. The Rev. Horatio Nelson, father of the admiral, lived at and kept a school in No.1 at some time.
