Tomb of Rear-Admiral Philip Affleck. C 1799. Bath stone. An elaborate neo-classical memorial, situated to the north of the chancel. On an oval base, the rectangular chest has paired engaged acanthus capitals at the projecting ends. The main field sport fine military trophies in relief, surrounding an inscription panel. That to the rear has carved drapery: cf the Smith tomb nearby for a very similar monument. It has, however, lost its upper urn. This tomb retains fine spearheaded railings, however, which resemble those to the Attwood monument [q.v.]. Listed as a very good neo-classical churchyard memorial. HISTORY: Affleck (1726-1799) was Admiral of the White and a Lord of the Admiralty in the 1790s, having served under Rodney in the West Indies in 1780. No 454 on the churchyard plan.
