13-JAN-11 Doddington and Newnham War Memorial
II
War memorial to the Fallen of the First and Second World Wars.
Constructed of Devonshire granite. By an unknown architect, it comprises a three stepped octagonal base surmounted by a plinth and a cross with tapered octagonal shaft. An inscription in black lettering on the plinth, reads 'IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN FROM/ DODDINGTON AND NEWNHAM WHO GAVE THEIR/ LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1919', followed by 'NEWNHAM 1939-1945 DODDINGTON. The names of the 26 Fallen from the First World War are listed under the village from which they came; they are listed on the west side for Doddington and the east for Newnham, in a touching gesture for the names to be closer to their village. The 10 names of the Fallen from the Second World War are listed under the main inscription, but again split east and west in accordance with their originating village.
HISTORY: The war memorial was erected in 1919 to honour the men of Doddington and Newnham who served and died during the First World War. It is situated on the parish boundary between Newnham and Doddington, on the southern side of The Street. The designer is unknown to us. The inscription 1939-1945 was added following the Second World War, and the monument now acts as a memorial to both conflicts.
A committee, of which Brigadier-General Jefferys, of Doddington Place, was chairman, was appointed for the promotion of the memorial, and the cost, just over £170, was met by subscription raised in the two villages and from others. The stone was supplied by Messrs Nankivell and Rooke, of Tavistock, and the monument was erected by Messrs Whiting Bros, of Ospringe. The site chosen is halfway between the two villages, on a piece of land given by Brigadier-General and Mrs Jeffreys, and later, in 1953, donated to Doddington Parish Council. The memorial was unveiled by the Major-General Thuillier, CB CVMG, Commander of the Thames and Medway Area.
New steps with a handrail, to ease access to the monument, were added in the C21.

REASONS FOR DESIGNATION
Doddington and Newnham War Memorial is designated at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historical: as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by this community in two World Wars it is of strong historic and cultural significance both at a local and a national level.
* Architectural: simple yet refined Devonshire Granite Cross on stepped podium that forms a sombre tribute to the Fallen of Doddington and Newnham.
