Summary
Swineshead War Memorial, erected in 1920 to commemorate the dead of the First World War, with the added names of those who died in the Second World War.
Reasons for Designation
The Swineshead War Memorial, erected in 1920, is designated at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic Interest: it is a moving reminder of the impact of the World Wars on both large and small communities, and of the sacrifice they suffered
* Architectural Interest: its design is elegant with restrained detail at each stage
History
Swineshead War Memorial was dedicated on Sunday 7th November 1920, at a service held in the nearby St Mary's Church. It stands in the middle of the Market Place close to the site of a C14 cross base and C18 stocks, entered under one List entry at Grade II. The plaques carry fifty names of those who died in World War I, and a further nine were added after World War II. Recently four other names have been added to the memorial, three that were missed after WW1 and one for WW2.
Details
War Memorial; dedicated in 1920; designed by Mr Bond of Grantham and built by Maxeys of Sleaford.
MATERIALS: limestone (possibly Barnack stone) with slate plaques.
PLAN: the cross has an octagonal base and shaft.
DESCRIPTION: from the octagonal base three steps rise to a tall octagonal plinth, around the top of which is crenellated detail. The plinth supports a slender tapering shaft surmounted by a calvary. At the top of each of the eight panels around the plinth are shields, below five of which are slate plaques, one of which is engraved with an inscription which reads IN THANKFUL REMEMBRANCE OF ALL THOSE WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN THE WAR 1914-1918 WHO STAND IF FREEDOM FALL WHO DIES IF ENGLAND LIVE. The remainder are inscribed with the names of those who died in both world wars.
