Summary

A former sanatorium, built 1883-4, for isolating sick girls at the Royal High School. It proved to be unsatisfactory and was later divided into two houses in 1919.

Reasons for Designation

* Architectural interest: as a specialist school building competently executed in the Gothic style;
* Group value: with the other Grade II listed buildings of the Royal High School.

History

The Sanatorium, for isolating sick girls from the main school, was built when the school was extended. However, in 1919 it proved unsatisfactory and was divided into two houses. The building forms an important group with other school buildings on the site.

Details

A school sanatorium in Gothic style, later converted to two houses. 1883-1884, converted 1919. By WG Habershon.

MATERIALS: rock faced Pennant limestone rubble with a Welsh slate roof.

PLAN: a cruciform plan with a lantern over a central hall.

EXTERIOR: single storey with attic. Mullion and transom windows. Pointed arch doorway in a gabled porch with a plank door. The central lantern/vent has a conical roof, and the rest of the building has steeply pitched roofs with tall chimney stack with offsets.

INTERIOR: Not inspected, but likely to have been altered as a result of its subdivision.

Legal

This building is listed under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 as amended for its special architectural or historic interest.
