Reasons for Designation
* Architectural interest: a good example of late-C18 or early-C19 former cottages that reflect the vernacular traditions of the area;
* Historic interest: although altered, the history of the building and its original form remain legible.
History
The building is formerly three houses that were constructed in the late C18 or early C19 and located on the edge of a former quarry.
Details
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar and dressed stone with a double Roman tile or concrete tile roof.
PLAN: The building is set on a former quarry edge, with the main range in two storeys to the street, but developing to three storeys and high basement wall at the rear, south side, and with a small gabled single-storey service building to the left. To the right of the main range, and at an angle to the second unit, is a former separate dwelling, in ashlar block and concrete tile roof, set on rock foundations at higher level than first unit.
EXTERIOR: The principal range has two twelve-pane sashes in flush dressed surrounds over large sixteen-pane, and a former shop-front in six large panes, with a panelled door, under a simple fascia, with to the left a panelled door under a slab hood on brackets. Cavetto cornice, with blocking course and parapet, returned to coped gables, and a very deep but narrow two-stage central ashlar stack. The rear has two twelve-pane sashes at three levels, and deep plain walling below. Adjacent range has a four-pane sash at each level, and a blocked doorway to the left. Each gable has a small stack, and the rear has two plain sashes at two levels.
INTERIOR: Not inspected.
