Summary
A mid-C19 cemetery entrance lodge, built in the Gothic style.
Reasons for Designation
* Architectural interest: as a mid-C19 cemetery lodge in the Gothic style;
* Group value: with the Grade II listed cemetery gate piers and boundary walls.
History
Opened as the Walcot Cemetery, and occupying twelve acres of high ground to the north-west of the City, this was laid out to the designs of Mr Milner, best known for laying out the grounds at Crystal Palace, South London. The structures were designed by the busy Bath firm of Hickes and Isaac. The railings were almost certainly removed during the Second World War drive for salvage.
Details
A mid-C19 entrance lodge to a cemetery, Hickes and Isaac, architects.
MATERIALS: rough-faced Pennant Stone ashlar with Bath Stone dressings and a decorative slate roof.
DESCRIPTION: a Gothic lodge of two storeys with a modern extension to the west. It has a cruciform plan with projecting gables to each principal elevation, and an entrance porch on the east-facing elevation. The north and south elevations are similar, with tripartite windows with stone mullions to the ground floor; the arched two-light windows to the first floor are set within stone surround with a quatrefoil above; and a stone band at impost level with ornamental floral motifs. The windows are plate-glass casements and there is a tall stone chimneystack with inset stars of red sandstone.
