Reasons for Designation
St Stephen Churchtown Cemetery War Memorial is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by this community in World War One, it is of strong historic and cultural significance both at a local and a national level
* Artistic interest: it is an elegantly detailed monument
History
The war memorial stands in St Stephen Churchtown Cemetery. It was erected in 1921 and was funded through public subscription. The names of those from the parish who fell during the Great War are remembered on this monument.
Details
The memorial is of granite stone construction, with a Celtic Cross above a shaft with a Celtic knot design, on a square plinth, with recessed slate panels on all sides. One of the slate panels in the plinth bears the following inscription:
"TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF OUR BROTHERS WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR KING AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1919"
The names of the fallen are inscribed in the slate panels on all sides of the plinth.
