Summary

Reasons for Designation
The War Memorial at Long Marston is designated at Grade II for the following principal reasons.
* Architectural interest: this bespoke memorial is constructed with craftsmanship from good quality materials and has design interest;
* Historic interest: it is a poignant reminder of the impact of world events on the local community and the sacrifice made for the defence of the country;
* Group Value: it has considerable group value with six Grade II listed buildings in the historic core of the village.
History
The War Memorial at Long Marston was built at a cost of £400 raised by public subscription and manufactured by Messrs. Jas Chandler. The memorial was built by Messrs Newman & Harper. It was unveiled by Lord Rothschild and dedicated by local clergy on 7th August 1921 in a service attended by local residents and the Long Marston brass band.
In 2006, a grant was awarded for the cleaning and repair of the Memorial, the repointing of stonework and refurbishment of the chain link and granite post fence.
In May 2011 a memorial to three US airmen killed in 1945 was placed adjacent to the war memorial.

War Memorial, built by Messrs Newman and Harper on a raised mound surrounded by a chain link and granite post fence, unveiled by Lord Rothschild and dedicated in August 1921.

EXTERIOR.
The memorial takes the form of a Celtic cross, approximately 5.8m high. The memorial is approached from the ground level by a flight of three steps and comprises a stone plinth with a three-tiered base, surmounted by a cross. The cross has a tapered base on which the following inscription and the names of the 10 World War I dead, and one from World War II, are carved. IN MEMORY OF/THE GALLANT MEN/OF THIS VILLAGE WHO FOUGHT AND FELL IN/ THE GREAT WAR/1914-1918/ (NAMES)/ THEY DID THEIR DUTY FOR KING AND COUNTRY/ 1939-1945/(NAME).
The cross has a tapering shaft, with a band of carved lattice decoration at the bottom. The arms of the cross have carved, interlacing circular and cruciform motifs, encircled by a guilloche band.
