HIGHCLERE, Milestone on A343 at approximately NGR 445 626

II

Milestone. Late C18. Painted stone. Broached square base, cylindrical shaft and polygonal top. Inscribed: Sarum 31, Newbury 3, Andover 13 and Oxford 29. Bench mark carved on shaft. The Andover and Chilton Pond turnpike was opened in 1766 and this is one of a series of similar milestones on the turnpike. An unusual example of a late C18 milestone.
