Milestone on B3400 at NGR 509 495
II
Milestone. Circa early C19. Painted stone with cast-iron plates. Tall stone with segmental head. Cast-iron rectangular plate on either side inscribed: London 54, Basingstoke 8 and Andover 10. The Andover and Basingstoke turnpike was opened in 1754 and this is one of a series of milestones on the turnpike.
A good example of a circa early C19 milestone with inscribed cast-iron plates.
