Summary

War memorial commemorating the First World War and Second World War. Pre-1929, designer unknown. Limestone.

Reasons for Designation

Bawtry War Memorial is listed at Grade II for the following principal reason:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impacts of world events on this community, and the sacrifices it has made in the conflicts of the C20.

History

The War Memorial for the Parish of Bawtry with Austerfield was erected by the Peake Family of Bawtry Hall on the edge of their grounds and commemorates men from the parish of Bawtry with Austerfield, including the village of Misson. The Peake's son, Lieutenant Raymond Peake, was one of the thirty-six local men who lost their lives in the First World War. The war memorial is first marked on the Epoch 3 1:2500 Ordnance Survey map published in 1929. Subsequently the names of three men who died in the Second World War were added.

The top of the war memorial was blown off in 2000. It was repaired and the lettering re-engraved in 2002, and rededicated in April 2003.
