Summary
A First and Second World War memorial, unveiled in 1919.
Reasons for Designation
The North Hill War Memorial on land adjacent to the crossroads at Congdon’s Shop is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Architectural interest: a simple yet well-crafted wheel-cross design;
* Group value: it has group value with the C19 pump house opposite (listed Grade II).
History
The war memorial at Congdon's Shop crossroad was erected to commemorate the parishioners of North Hill who died during the First World War. A piece of land for the memorial was given by Mr Alfred Barriball and local stone masons were asked to submit designs. A united service was held to dedicate the memorial on 16 December 1919. It was unveiled by Mr Barriball. Further names were later added to commemorate the men of the parish who died in the Second World War.
