Reasons for Designation

The war memorial at Broadhempston is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impacts of world events on this community, and the sacrifices it has made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Architectural interest: a simple cross design, well-crafted in dressed granite;
* Intactness: the structure is unaltered;
* Group value: it groups well with the neighbouring listed buildings.

History

Broadhempston War Memorial was dedicated and unveiled in March 1921. It appears to be little altered since its first construction.

Details

A war memorial of 1921 date.

MATERIALS: constructed of dressed granite.

DESCRIPTION: the memorial is a freestanding cross on a broad, tapering column. The structure is 11ft 6ins high with a two-stepped, square base on a concrete foundation. The east face of the top step is inscribed with black lettering: GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918/ "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS."/ WILLIAM GEORGE FIELD, 1st 5th DEVONS,/ JOHN WILLIAM GRANT, 16th ROYAL WARWICKS,/ LEONARD PALK 5th GLOUCESTERS.
