Summary

A First and Second World War memorial, dedicated in 1920.

Reasons for Designation

Kenton war memorial is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Architectural interest: as a memorial with a modest and sombre design;
* Group value: it forms a group with a number of other listed buildings in the centre of Kenton, including the church of All Saints (Grade I).

History

Kenton War Memorial was erected to remember the members of the parish who died in the First World War. It was gifted to Kenton Parish Council by Mr Joshua John Neale of Oxton House. He died before the unveiling and his son presented the memorial on his behalf. It was unveiled by the Earl of Devon at a dedication ceremony on the 13 March 1920. Fourteen names were inscribed on the memorial. After the Second World War eight further names were added. The memorial includes the date that each of the commemorated died.
