Summary
First World War memorial. Dedicated 1920.
Reasons for Designation
Turweston War Memorial, within the churchyard of St Mary’s Church, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Design: a well-executed, carved, medieval-style memorial in the style of a Calvary;
* Group value: with the Grade II*-listed church of St Mary.
History
The memorial is recorded as having been dedicated on 1 January 1920.
Details
The stone memorial, overall c2.5m high, comprises a figure of Christ crucified set within a pointed, gothic, alcove. That stands on a stone plinth which carries a plaque inscribed GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS,/ THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS./ (6 names). The plinth stands on a small, three-stepped base.
The memorial is set within the churchyard of St Mary’s Church (listed Grade II*), against the east boundary.
