The milestone is located on the north verge boundary of the A684 approximately 250 metres east of the Junction with Wesholme Bank and 600 metres east of the Aysgarth Falls junction

Reasons for Designation

The milestone at Heads Bank, Aysgarth is designated at Grade II for the following principal reasons:

* Intactness: the milestone is believed to survive in its original location and its lettering remains clearly legible

* Design interest: it incorporates a hand on each inscribed face pointing in the direction of travel

* Historic interest: it is an important physical reminder of an age of pre-motorised transport in the Yorkshire Dales, and, in a wider context, the development of England's transport network

* Group value: it has strong group value with the other listed milestones located along the A684

History

The milestone at Heads Bank, Aysgarth was erected in the late-C19 following the reorganisation of highways authorities under the Local Government Act of 1888.

Details

The milestone is constructed of cast iron, painted white, and is triangular in plan. On the left face is a relief of a hand pointing right above relief lettering reading 'LEYBURN 7 MILES', and on the right face is a relief of a hand pointing left above relief lettering reading 'HAWES 10 MILES'. Both the hands and lettering are painted black.
