Summary

A memorial cross constructed of stone, erected in 1920.

Reasons for Designation

The war memorial at Whiteladies Road, Bristol is listed at Grade II following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impacts of world events on this community, and the sacrifices it has made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Architectural interest: a simple cross design, well-crafted in dressed stone;
* Intactness: the structure is unaltered;
* Group value: it groups well with the neighbouring listed building.

History

The war memorial was dedicated by the Bishop of Bristol in October 1920. It appears to be little altered since its first construction, although it was restored in the late C20.

Details

MATERIALS: constructed of stone.

DESCRIPTION: the memorial is a freestanding cross. It has a two-stepped octagonal base surmounted by an octagonal plinth and shaft. The names of the fallen are inscribed in the moulded panels of the plinth. The north face is inscribed: TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY/ OF THOSE CONNECTED WITH/ THIS CHURCH AND PARISH/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN/ THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918/ R.I.P./ THEY WERE A WALL UNTO US/ BOTH BY NIGHT AND DAY.
