Summary

First World War memorial with later additions for the Second World War.

Reasons for Designation

The war memorial, which stands beside the Roman Catholic church of St Marie of the Annunciation in Almond Brook Road Church, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reason:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20.

History

The war memorial was erected in remembrance of the Roman Catholic men of Standish who died in the First World War. Further inscriptions and the names of those who died in the Second World War were added later. Originally it stood outside the presbytery, but was moved c2004 to its current position just north-west of the church of St Marie.

Details

The stone memorial comprises a Celtic cross bearing the figure of Christ crucified. The wheel-head is inscribed IN HOC SIGNO VINCES. A wreath is carved in relief at the base of the cross shaft. The cross shaft stands on a square, splayed, pedestal and plinth.

Inscribed on the front of the pedestal in applied metal lettering is LORD HAVE MERCY ON THE SOULS OF/ (13 NAMES)/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE/ EUROPEAN WAR 1914-1918/ AND TO CHERISH WHOSE MEMORY THIS CROSS IS/ ERECTED BY THEIR FELLOW-PARISHIONERS & FRIENDS./ MAY THEY REST IN PEACE. AMEN. Inscribed on the side of the pedestal in applied metal lettering is HAVE MERCY ALSO O LORD/ ON THE SOULS OF/ (11 NAMES)/ WHO DIED IN THE 1939-1945 WAR/ MAY THEY REST IN PEACE.
