Summary
A First World War memorial with a stone tablet added later to commemorate later conflicts.
Reasons for Designation
Filton War Memorial is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Architectural interest: a modest, yet elegant, roughly-hewn cross tops the elongated plinth;
* Group value: it forms part of a good group of listed structures including the Church of St Peter (Grade II) and another commemorative structure, a nearby C18 churchyard monument (Grade II).
History
The memorial is within the churchyard of the church of St Peter (Grade II). Originally erected to commemorate the fallen of the First World War, it was later altered to remember those who died during the Second World War and later conflicts. Within the church are two further memorials which commemorate the casualties of war within in the parish of Filton. One commemorates the employees of the nearby aircraft works who lost their lives in both World Wars, and the other remembers the casualties of the September 1940 daylight raid on the Filton Aircraft Factory.
