Summary

First World War memorial, with later additions for the Second World War.

Reasons for Designation

Brafield-on-the-Green War Memorial, in the churchyard of the Church of St Lawrence, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on this local community, and the sacrifice it has made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Group value: with the Grade II* church of St Lawrence.

History

The war memorial was erected after the First World War, dedicated to the parishioners who died serving during the conflict. A further plaque commemorating the two men who died during the Second World War was subsequently added.

Details

Brafield-on-the-Green War Memorial stands in the churchyard, to the south-west of the tower of the church of St Lawrence (Grade II*). About 3m tall, it comprises a plain, grey sandstone Latin cross with a three-stepped foot, set on a slightly tapering, square plinth. That stands on a square base, raised on three steps.

A stone panel on the front, east-facing, side of the plinth is inscribed TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ THIS CROSS IS ERECTED IN GRATEFUL/ AND EVERLASTING MEMORY OF ALL/ THOSE FROM THIS PARISH WHO GAVE/ THEIR LIVES FOR KING AND COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1919/ (12 NAMES)/ GRANT THEM, O LORD ETERNAL REST. Below this panel, a small laurel wreath is carved in relief on the base.

On the left side of the plinth is a stone panel bearing the inscription ALSO TO THOSE WHO IN/ 1939 – 1945/ SERVED AND DIED TO PRESERVE/ OUR GLORIOUS HERITAGE/ (2 NAMES)/ MAY THEY REST IN PEACE.
