Summary
A memorial commemorating the men of the parish of Wayford who served their country in the First World War (1914-1918).
Reasons for Designation
Wayford War Memorial situated in the churchyard of St Michael, Park Lane, Wayford, South Somerset, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Architectural interest: a modest, yet elegant, stone Latin cross with a three-tiered base;
* Group value: it forms part of a good group of listed structures including the church of St Michael (Grade II*) and two other commemorative structures (both Grade II) also situated in the churchyard, forming part of the setting to the Grade II registered landscape associated with Wayford Manor (Grade I).
History
The memorial in Wayford was probably erected in the early 1920s as part of the first wave of public commemoration of the First World War.
Inside the adjacent church of St Michael and All Angels is a Ham stone tablet which commemorates two members of the parish who died during the First World War. A hand-painted Roll of Honour lists all 37 members of the parish who died whilst serving their country whilst serving in the Second World War, with underneath a wooden tablet recording a further two members of the parish who died in that same conflict.
