Reasons for Designation

The war memorial in the churchyard of the Church of All Saints, Lopen, Somerset is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of the First World War and the sacrifices this community made during the conflict;
* Architectural interest: a well-crafted memorial cross in dressed stone;
* Intactness: the structure is relatively unaltered.

History

The memorial to the men of Lopen who fought and died in the First World War was erected in the 1920s. It is shown on the Ordnance Survey Map of 1929.

Details

A war memorial of 1920s date.

MATERIALS: constructed of granite on a stone slab base.

DESCRIPTION: the memorial is a freestanding cross with a square profile tapering column and wheel cross surmounting a square moulded plinth and base. The front face (north-east) of the plinth is inscribed in lead lettering: TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY OF/ THE BRAVE MEN OF LOPEN/ FREDERICK HALL/ FRED PIDGEON/ ERNEST WILLIAM EDMONDS/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR/ COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918. The north-west face has an inscription of 2016: ALSO/ BROTHERS/ GEORGE AND/ WILLIAM HENRY/ GREENHAM.
