Summary
War memorial, c1920. Further plaque added after Second World War.
Reasons for Designation
Fivehead War Memorial, which is situated in the centre of the village, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impacts of world events on this community, and the sacrifices it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Design: a well-executed memorial in Doulting stone;
* Group value: it stands adjacent to the churchyard of the Grade I listed church of St Martin and close to several other listed buildings.
History
The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. One such memorial was erected in Fivehead, after being first proposed in May 1919, to commemorate the twelve local men who died during the conflict. It is prominently situated on the village green, adjacent to the churchyard of St Martin’s church. Following the Second World War a second dedicatory inscription was added. The steps of the war memorial were repointed in 2014

War memorial, c1920. Further plaque added after Second World War.
DESCRIPTION: it takes the form of a stylised Maltese cross carved from Doulting stone on an octagonal tapered shaft mounted upon a plinth. Beneath this is an octagonal base which carries two bronze plaques on its south-east side. The first is inscribed: (NAMES) / 1914 “FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH.” 1918; the other carries the name of the local man who died during the Second World War and the dates of this conflict. The structure stands on three octagonal steps.
