Summary

First World War memorial.

Reasons for Designation

Over Knutsford War Memorial, situated at the junction of Mobberley Road and Thorneyholme Drive, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic Interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on this local community, and the sacrifice it has made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Group value: with the Church of St Cross (Grade II*-listed).

History

The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. One such memorial was raised by public subscription at the junction of Mobberley Road and Thorneyholme Drive, Over Knutsford (also known as Crosstown), to commemorate the 47 local servicemen who died in the conflict.

Details

The sandstone memorial, c3m tall, stands in a small raised garden overlooking the main road, some 60m to the south-east of the Church of St Cross (Grade II*-listed). It consists of a fleur-de-lis cross with a moulded foot rising from an octagonal shaft. The moulded foot of the shaft stands on a square, tapering, plinth set on a three-stepped square base. The raised garden is enclosed by a stone wall. Access from the pavement is provided by a set of steps in front of the memorial.

On the front face of the plinth is an inscription that reads IN GRATEFUL REMEMBERANCE/ OF THE MEN/ CONNECTED WITH THIS PARISH/ WHO DIED/ FOR FREEDOM AND HONOUR/ IN THE GREAT WAR, 1914 – 1918/ THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE. Above the inscription is a Greek cross, carved in low relief. The two side faces bear the names of the men who fell in the First World War. All the inscriptions are incised.
