Reasons for Designation
Broadway War Memorial is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Architectural interest: a sombre but elegant memorial with good inscriptions;
* Group value: with the listed buildings on the north side of Broadway Road, particularly Church House, the village’s former Congregational Chapel.
History
The memorial was erected after the First World War to commemorate the nine men of the parish of Broadway who lost their lives during the conflict. It was made by Mr A Ruscombe Emery, a local stonemason. After 1945, the memorial was altered to commemorate the serviceman from the village who had died in the Second World War. The structure was cleaned and repaired in 2013.
