BRADFORD,
LITTLE HORTON LANE (east side),
Main Block at St Luke's Hospital

II

Hospital. 1852. Built as the Bradford Union Workhouse. Lockwood and Mawson were the architects and the workhouse is, with St George's Hall, their earliest commission in Bradford, contemporary with their work at Saltaire. Simple Italianate detailing relating to features at Saltaire. Single storey ranges flanking 2 storey entrance pavilion, nearest road. Arcaded ground floor windows. Deep modillion bracket eaves cornices. Hipped slate roofs. The 2 storey centre has a 3 bay front. Paired archivolt arched pilastered windows on first floor, sill band. Single arched windows on ground floor and large projecting portal with archivolt arch rising from squat piers, heavy bracketed cornice above. The main block lies behind built on an H plan with a long forecourt. Three storey sandstone "brick" with ashlar dressings. Five bay, broad cross range with centre break of 3 windows. Sill bands and deep flat eaves on modillion brackets. Slight central recess to break surmounted by pilastered belvedere with pyramid roof. First floor archivolt arched windows, linking impost string. Plain linteled windows to ground and second floors, some retaining glazing bar sashes. The top floor of centre break has triple grouping of smaller arched windows, only the centre glazed. Principal entrance is of similar design to portal in entrance pavilion. The wings have low pitched gabled fronts with overhanging eaves, broken forward over central grouping of 3 arcaded windows. Engaged columns dividing lights on second floor; solid ashlar balconettes to first floor windows. The 11 bay side elevations have similar detailing to front. The centre 3 bays break forward with the eaves carried up in low pitcher gable. At the ridge intersection of the cross wings with the main block are low octagonal lanterns with lunettes and inverted consoles rising to breaks in cornice capping.

The above mentioned building was deleted in error by virtue of the 22nd amendment to the list dated 16 September 1997.
