Summary
First World War memorial, 1920, with additions for later conflicts.
Reasons for Designation
Bempton War Memorial, which stands in the churchyard of the church of St Michael, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Group value: with the Grade II*-listed church of St Michael.
History
A faculty for Bempton War Memorial was granted in December 1919. It was designed by Mr J Bilton of Hull. Paid for by public subscription, it was unveiled by the vicar, Reverend JM Mawson, on 16 January 1920 and dedicated by Reverend Francis Gurdon, Bishop of Hull. Following the end of the Second World War an inscription was added to the base of the memorial commemorating those who fell in that conflict. A further inscription was added to the base, dedicated to a soldier who lost his life during the Korean War. Three names were added to the memorial in 2014, funded by War Memorials Trust.
