Summary
First World War Memorial.
Reasons for Designation
Little Comberton War Memorial, situated at the crossroads of Pershore Road, Wick Road and Manor Lane, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20.
History
The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. Erected on land donated by Miss M Parker, Little Comberton was one such memorial. Conservation and repair work was carried out in 2014, funded by War Memorials Trust, included the cleaning of the memorial and the sharpening and repainting of the inscription. The memorial was re-dedicated on 2 November 2014.
Details
Little Comberton War Memorial takes the form of a memorial stone in the shape of a scroll. It is constructed of Portland stone but sits on a Yorkshire stone square base.
An inscription on the face of the memorial reads 1914–1919 followed by the names of all from the parish who served in the First World War. All inscriptions are incised and painted in black enamel except for the three who gave their lives, which are gilded.
